Shafroth Files for Colorado’s Second Congressional District

Boulder, Colorado (May 2, 2007) – Will Shafroth, a leading Colorado conservationist and education advocate in Boulder, announced today that he had filed papers with the Federal Elections Commission for the Shafroth for Congress Committee. 

Shafroth, a Democrat, is seeking the Second Congressional District seat currently held by Democratic Representative Mark Udall who is running for the United States Senate.

“As a father of three teenaged children, I feel a deep sense of responsibility to leave our state, nation and world a better place for my children and the world’s children, said Shafroth. 

“I will be a strong and creative voice for the Second Congressional District on the many challenges facing our country including ending the war in Iraq, providing affordable health care, reducing global warming, and improving our education system.  “The Second Congressional District has been a national leader on these and other issues facing our country and I look forward to bringing our successes to the national stage,” Shafroth said. 

“I have devoted my life to public service and improving the quality of life for Coloradans,” Shafroth added.  “From helping to conserve more than 300,000 acres of unique environmental treasures in Colorado to working to improve our schools, I have joined with diverse groups of people to solve problems and achieve common goals.”

In describing the people who have endorsed his candidacy Shafroth said, “I’m honored to have this growing group of people who have done so much for our state committed to my election.” Shafroth’s initial endorsers include Ruth Wright, John Fielder, Mo Siegel, Crystal Gray, Ron Nichol, Dick Lamm, Rich Lopez, Cathy Carlson, George Garcia, Don Brown, Lesley Smith, Tom Strickland, and Stan Garnett. Garnett, a partner with Brownstein Hyatt Farber and Schreck and former President of the Boulder Valley School Board, will serve as Treasurer of the campaign.

Shafroth’s announcement today forms the Shafroth for Congress campaign committee which allows for organizing and funding his campaign. Shafroth will officially launch the campaign and campaign activities later this year after meeting with and learning from people throughout the district, which includes all of Gilpin, Clear Creek, Summit, Eagle, Grand, Broomfield counties and portions of Adams, Boulder, Jefferson, and Weld counties.

Shafroth, 49, is a fourth generation Coloradan who grew up in Arapahoe County and attended Cherry Creek Schools. His great-grandfather, John Shafroth, was Colorado’s governor between 1909 and 1913, and served in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. Will, Erica — his wife of 20 years — and their three children Ethan, 19, Anna, 16 and Lily, 13, all live in Boulder.
